Tahir Büyükakın

President, Marmara Municipalities Union & Mayor, Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality

Tahir Büyükakın was born in 1969 in Derince, Kocaeli. He received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Political Sciences, Istanbul University, where he completed his master's and doctoral studies as well.

He pursued his academic studies as a research assistant at the Department of Economics of Kocaeli University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and has continued to work in the fields of economic crisis and stability policies and macroeconomics at the Department of Economics Policy. He became associate professor in 2013.

He worked as Counsellor, Deputy Secretary General and Secretary General in Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality between the years 2005-2014 and he was appointed to the governorship of Bilecik in June 2017. In the March 31st, 2019 Local Elections, he was elected as the Mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality. He was elected as the President of the MBB in the First Ordinary Assembly Meeting of 2019, held on 25 April 2019, which was also the 44th Anniversary of the Marmara Municipalities Union.
