Mário J. Alves

Secretary General, International Federation of Pedestrians & Transport and Mobility Specialist

Mário J. Alves has a degree in Civil Engineering from Lisbon Technical University (IST, 1988) and a Master of Science in Transport from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (ICSTM, 1992). He worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Transport Studies of the University of London and the Centre for Urban and Regional Systems of the University of Lisbon. As a transport and mobility management consultant he was the coordinator of mobility plans and participated in several European projects - on the promotion of active modes of transport. Mário was part of the International Scientific Programme Committee of the conference Walk21 in Toronto and National Coordinator of the COST Action Pedestrian Quality Needs. He was expert advisor for the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy and Transport and worked as senior advisor to the Mayor of Lisbon. He was invited by the EPFL, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne to be part of the panel of experts (Spacewatch) to advise and recommend the Swiss authorities on issues related to mobility and urban planning. He was consultant for the Portuguese National Plan for the Promotion of Cycling and other Soft Modes. Currently is Secretary-General of the International Federation of Pedestrians. Over the last decade, Mario wrote articles and presented numerous papers and seminars worldwide on topics related to transport, sustainable mobility and Road Safety.
