Barış Salihoğlu
Prof., Manager of the Institute of Marine Sciences, Middle East Technical University
Prof. Dr Baris Salihoglu is an oceanographer with over 20 years of experience in ecosystems in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Sea of Marmara, Atlantic and Pacific oceans and Antarctica. After receiving his PhD in Physical Oceanography from ODU, the USA, in 2005, Salihoğlu conducted post-doctoral research for two years at LEGOS-CNRS, France. Then he returned to METU in 2007 with the EU Marie Curie scholarship. He has been a faculty member at METU-IMS since 2009. He is the director of the institute and a 3.4 M € DEKOSIM project establishing a new interdisciplinary centre of excellence. This centre aims to be a national and regional leader in marine ecosystem observation and forecasting. In addition to being a partner in many national and international projects, he is the coordinator of EC H2020 Black Sea CONNECT and BRIDGE-BS projects. He has more than 40 international articles that have been cited more than 1000 times. His research interests cover various topics, ranging from mathematical modelling of marine ecosystems to descriptive physical oceanography. His main research focus is on exploring marine ecosystem and biogeochemical dynamics via the combination of modelling and data analyses. He conducts research on many subjects, from mathematical modelling of marine ecosystems to descriptive physical oceanography. He works on developing biogeochemical cycle models in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Seas. He has been in an effort of establishing a Blue Growth Center in Turkey that will focus on promoting the sustainable growth of marine sectors at a national scale.
